William Fischer Wilkinson, of Hurstbourne Priors, Whitchurch, died on November 30th, 1942, at the age of 78.
He was educated at Harrow and Freiberg, Saxony. In 1887 he was articled to Mr. George Seymour (the first President of the Institution), of Messrs. Bainbridge, Seymour & Co., consulting engineers. His mining experience with that firm, first as pupil and later as assistant engineer, was obtained in Mexico, the U.S.A., Africa, Europe, and Asia Minor.
In October, 1895, he was appointed consulting engineer to the African Estates Company of Johannesburg, and in 1899 joined the engineering staff of the Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, Ltd., with which company he remained until his retirement. Mr. Wilkinson was an Associate Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers and a Fellow of the Geological Society.
He was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1893 and was transferred to Membership in 1902. He served as a Member of Council from 1902 until 1917.
