Louis Albert Wood died on 30th July, 1965, at the age of 75.
Educated at the University of Leeds from 1907 to 1910, Mr. Wood graduated with a B.Sc. honours degree in chemistry. He joined Minerals Separation, Ltd., and during the next fourteen years was engaged in ore testing and metallurgical work for the company in Chile, Russia and at various plants in the British Isles.
In 1925 Mr. Wood was appointed metallurgist and mine manager to Tetiuhe Mining Corporation, having full control of the metallurgical operations of the plant in Siberia. From 1931 to 1936 he was employed as metallurgist to British American Mines, Ltd., and to Siamese Tin Mines, Ltd., and was subsequently engaged in business on his own account until September, 1937. He then joined Mill Close mines, Derbyshire, as metallurgist, remaining there until taking up the post of mill superintendent, Trepca Mines, Ltd., Yugoslavia, in April, 1940. Fifteen months later he returned to the United Kingdom, being appointed metallurgist to Non-Ferrous Minerals Control (Ministry of Supply), with whom he remained until 1944. He then joined Selection Trust, Ltd., as a metallurgist, being concerned with work for the Group’s diamond companies. In 1953 he was promoted to the position of metallurgist for the Selection Trust Group — a position he held until his retirement in 1958.
Mr. Wood was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1917 and was transferred to full Membership in 1943.
