Dr. Henry Arthur White died in South Africa early in July, 1944, at the age of 73.
He was born in Gloucestershire and went to South Africa early in his career. For two years he acted as assistant to the chief assayer to the Standard Bank, subsequently holding the position of chief assayer for three years to West Rand Mines, Ltd. From the close of the Boer War he was engaged as chief assayer to May Consolidated Gold Mining Co., Ltd., until August, 1905, when he became cyanide manager. Three years later, in December, 1908, he was appointed consulting metallurgist to Messrs. Adolf Goerz Co., Ltd. He eventually became consulting metallurgist to the Union Corporation, in which capacity he served for many years until his death.
He submitted a paper entitled ‘Gold metallurgy in the Union of South Africa’ to the Empire Mining and Metallurgical Congress of 1924, and contributed a number of valuable papers to the Chemical Metallurgical and Mining Society of South Africa, of which he had been a Member of Council. He was last year admitted to honorary membership of the Society of Chemical Industry.
Dr. White was elected a Member of the Institution in 1911.
