Eric Francis Vesey Wells died in Johannesburg, South Africa, after a short illness, on October 21st, 1933, at the age of 48.
He entered the Camborne School of Mines in 1903, and on completion of the full course went to Linares, Spain, in 1906. In the following year, he went to South Africa, where the rest of his career was spent. He was successively with the Randfontein Gold Mining Co., as surveyor and sampler, with the East Rand Proprietary as head sampler, with the Crown Mines in charge of development, and with the Village Deep and Turf Mines as shift-boss, underground manager and acting manager.
In March, 1917, he joined H.M. Forces and served in the Royal Engineers as 2nd lieutenant. After demobilization, he returned to South Africa and for about ten years was manager of the Tweefontein Colliery. In 1927 he was appointed manager of the Witbank Colliery, Ltd., and held that position until his death.
Mr. Wells was elected a Member of the Institution in 1918.
