Benjamin Hanvey Wood died at a nursing home in Streatham, on October 16th, 1941, at the age of 55.
He was for upwards, of eight years a pupil at the Allgemeine Deutsche Schule, Antwerp, and from 1902 to 1904 was an apprentice engineer at the Phoenix Works in the same city. In October, 1904, he came to England and, entered the Redruth School of Mines, but on completion of his course returned in January, 1908, to Belgium as agent for a fuel economizer. In the following year he was appointed assistant surveyor to the Darien Gold Mining Company, Ltd., Cana, Republic of Panama, and two years later was for some months assistant engineer of the Guredagh Forest Syndicate, Keshan, Turkey.
In September, 1912, he went to Venezuela as technical assistant manager of the New Callao Gold Mining Company, Ltd., subsequently being acting general manager. In September, 1915, he was appointed underground manager of the El Amparo Mine, Ltd., at El Callao, a position which he held for some years. From 1931 onwards, he was attached to the Safety in Mines Research Board, in London.
Mr. Wood was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1906, and was elected an Associate in 1916.
