Arthur Stanley Williams died on 12th June, 1955, at the age of 78.
He was a student at the City and Guilds Technical College, Finsbury, from 1894 to 1896, and for the early part of his career was mainly engaged on chemical and metallurgical work in London, Cornwall, and South Wales. In June, 1902, he was appointed assistant smelting manager to Mijnbouw Maatschappij Soemalata, Dutch East Indies, where he was in charge of ore-dressing and smelting operations, analytical and assay work. He was made manager in 1905 and had control of the general administration of the company’s properties. He left after two years to take charge of a prospecting party in Malaya.
Mr. Williams joined Jos Tin Area (Nigeria), Ltd., shortly afterwards, and had been associated with the company ever since. From the position of assistant manager he was made mine manager in 1916, then became general manager, and later director and finally chairman and managing director. He relinquished the chairmanship in 1952 but remained on the board. He had earlier served as consultant to other Nigerian companies, and had been chairman of Lower Bisichi (Nigeria), Ltd.
He was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1906 and was transferred to Membership in 1908.
