John Leighton Taylor died tragically on 20th July, 1957, in the Kafue River, Northern Rhodesia, at the age of 24.
He was educated at Preston Grammar School from 1942 to 1946 and at Merchant Taylors’ School from 1946 to 1950. He then entered Bristol University, graduating after three years with B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in pure geology, and completed his training with a year at the Royal School of Mines (1953-54) studying mining geology. On leaving, Mr. Taylor worked for over a year in Northern Cape Province and Southern Rhodesia with Mr. A.H. Douw, consulting geologist, and then for a few months for African Associated Mines (Pvt.), Ltd., Bulawayo.
In January, 1956, he joined Rhodesian Selection Trust (Services), Ltd., at Kalulushi, Northern Rhodesia, and was transferred a month later to Rhodesian Selection Trust, Ltd., Mufulira, as assistant mine geologist. He lost his life by drowning in an accident on the Kafue River.
Mr. Taylor joined the Institution as a Student in 1954.
