Frank Woollaston Timmis died at the Colonial Hospital, Gibraltar, from pneumonia after only three days’ illness, on February 6th, 1931, at the age of 46.
After the usual course of education which, however, included a fifth year at Charterhouse devoted to special science, he had a four years’ course at King’s College, London, comprising mechanical and electrical engineering, mining, metallurgy and surveying, from which he emerged with considerable distinction, including honours in all subjects, the Associateship of the College and the Tennant prize in mineralogy.
He then spent two years in Cornwall at West Kitty, Wheal Vor and Dolcoath. In 1909 he went to Portugal to Messrs. Mason & Barry’s San Domingos mine, and in 1913 he became associated with the Rio Tinto mines, a connexion which, with the exception of the war years, when he was on active service in the Royal Artillery, was maintained until his death.
Mr. Timmis was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1906, and was transferred to Associateship in 1913 and to Membership in 1929.
