Charles William Anchitel Theal died in Marandellas, Southern Rhodesia, on 21st July, 1955, at the age of 58.
Mr. Theal was born in South Africa and began his career in 1913 as a learner at Shamva mine; Rhodesia. He left to serve in H.M. Forces from October, 1914, to February, 1919, and on demobilization entered the Camborne School of Metalliferous gaining a first-class Diploma of the School in 1921.
He returned to Rhodesia on joining London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Co., Ltd., in August, 1921, as relieving surveyor at Rezende mine, Penhalonga, and in November of that year was transferred to Cam and Motor gold mine as sampler and assistant surveyor, while still acting as relieving surveyor at Rezende until his appointment as surveyor in the following year. He held this position until 1926 when he was made assistant engineer to the London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Co., and was appointed to the Executive Committee of the Salisbury Chamber of Mines. In 1929 Mr. Theal went to Cam and Motor mine as assistant manager; he left early in 1933 on his appointment as additional manager for two months for Sherwood Starr Gold Mining Co., Ltd., Que Que, prior to becoming manager in March, 1933. He resigned four years later to operate the Jojo and Wonderland mines. Recently Mr. Theal had been living in Bulawayo.
He was elected an Associate Member of the Institution in 1928 and was transferred to Membership in 1935.
