William George Sutherland died after a day’s illness, of heart failure, on June 1st, 1935, at the age of 60.
An Australian by birth, he graduated in mining and metallurgy at the South Australian School of Mines, Adelaide, in 1897. For about eighteen months from the beginning of the following year he was a chemist at the Lake View Consols plant at Kalgoorlie, and from 1899 to 1901 he was metallurgist to the Golden Horseshoe Estates Co., Ltd.
ln 1904 he was appointed general manager of the Fremantle Smelter, Ltd., and on the liquidation of that company on June 30th, 1907, he represented the liquidators and carried on the business by the purchase of ores for shipment to Europe. He was shortly afterwards appointed general manager of the Fremantle Trading Co., Ltd., which was formed to acquire the assets of the smelter company, and in addition he carried on practice on his own account as a consulting mining and metallurgical engineer.
Mr. Sutherland was elected a Member of the Institution in 1910.
