Malcolm Roberts died at his residence in Wimbledon, after a short illness, on January 13th, 1933, at the age of 62.
After four years’ attendance at the Bradford Technical College, he went with the aid of a scholarship to the Royal School of Mines, where he graduated with the A.R.S.M. in mining. He then spent some months gaining experience in the Cornish tin mines and in coal and ironstone mines in Yorkshire. Following this experience he was for a year in the engineering department of the London County Council.
In 1892 he went to Bolivia to join the staff of the Cia. Guadalupe de Bolivia, and held the position for 4½ years. During part of that time and until 1903 he was sub-administrator and administrator of mines of that company. In 1903 he was appointed manager of the Tasna mines of Messrs. Aramayo, Francke & Co., Ltd., four years later becoming general manager of the company, and finally consultant. He contributed two papers to the Transactions of the Institution, ‘Minerals found in the Silver Lodes of Tatasi and Portugalete, Bolivia’ (Vol. VII) and ‘Chorolque Tin Mines and Alluvial Deposits, Bolivia’ (Vol. IX).
Mr. Roberts was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1896 and was transferred to Membership in 1909.
