Edward John Johnston Rodda died at Kuala Lumpur, F.M.S., in May, 1932, at the age of 62.
He was born in America of British parents, and in 1886 became a mill hand at West Point, California. In 1887 he was employed in Nevada by C.A. Luckhardt and a year later went to Honduras, where he was assayer at Santa Lucia and at San Marcos. In 1891 he was appointed assayer at the Alamo gold mines, Mexico, and was subsequently promoted to mill manager and superintendent.
Four years later he left Mexico for South Africa, where for two years he was surface manager at the Lancaster gold mines at Krugersdorp. From 1897 to 1899 he managed the San Sebastian mines at Santa Rosa, Salvador, and in 1900 he went to Australia, where he worked for many years. He was manager of the Mungana Mining Co. in Queensland until 1907, when he became general mining manager of Chillagoe Mines, and continued to serve in that position for five years. From 1912 he was for many years general manager of the Mungana company, and at the time of his death he was consulting engineer to several mining companies in the Federated Malay States.
Mr. Rodda was elected a Member of the Institution in 1914.
