Charles William Roe died early in 1933 at Brisbane, Queensland, after a long illness, at the age of 50.
He entered Sydney University in 1908 and graduated as Bachelor of Engineering in 1909. During the following two years he worked underground at Gympie and Mount Morgan, Queensland, and from 1911 to 1913 he was assistant surveyor with the Queensland Government Railways. In the latter year he went to the Gold Coast to join the staff of the Taquah Mine, where he was sampler and surveyor for a year, and underground manager for eighteen months.
For nearly three years from 1916 onwards he served in the 251 and 252 Tunnelling Companies, Royal Engineers, in France, holding a Captains commission. After leaving the army he was for a year engaged in prospecting in East Africa, and in 1920 he went to Nigeria, where he worked for nine years with the Lower Bisichi, Rayfield, Yarde Kerri, and Nigerian Base Metals tin mining companies. He returned to Queensland a year or so before his death.
Mr. Roe was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1916.
