Charles Henry Richards died in India on November 23rd, 1924.
He was enrolled as a student of the Yorkshire College, Victoria University, Leeds, in 1891, in the engineering department, in addition taking the coal-mining course. In 1894 he underwent a year’s further training at the Camborne School of Mines, with practical work at Carn Brea. Henceforth his professional work was entirely done in India.
From 1895 to 1901 he was assistant underground agent at the Nundydroog gold mine, Mysore State, and for the following 18 months he held the position of superintendent of the New Kempinkote Gold Field, Ltd., with charge of operations on the Attikuppa Syndicate’s property, and he also acted as superintendent of the Balaghat Gold Mining Co., Ltd. In 1902 he was appointed superintendent of the Coromandel Gold Mining Co. of India, Ltd., while still acting in the same capacity for the Balaghat Company. In 1905 he held the position of Chairman of the Kolar Gold Field Mining Board, and in 1906 he was elected a Member of the Mining and Geological Institute of India and a Member of the Council of that body. In 1911 he returned to the Nundydroog mine and remained there, as manager, until his death.
Mr. Richards was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1899, and was transferred to Membership in 1906.
