Themistocles Michael Waldemar Patsalas died in Kumasi, Ghana, on 20th May, 1956, at the age of 36.
Mr. Patsalas was born and educated in Cyprus. He came to England in 1939 for the mining course at the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining and gained the A.C.S.M. in 1942.
In March, 1943, he went to Nigeria on his appointment as junior mining assistant to A.O. Nigeria, Ltd., and two years later returned to Cyprus in the position of engineer in charge of underground operations of Cyprus Chrome Co., Ltd., at the Troodos mine. He left in December, 1947, to join the Hellenic Mining Co., Ltd., as a surveyor with the geophysical prospecting department, remaining with this company until 1954 when he was appointed operations superintendent to Socony-Vacuum Oil Co., Ltd., in Accra.
Mr. Patsalas joined the Institution as a Student in 1941, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1949.
