Samuel Hart Porteous, Flight Sergeant, R.A.F., was killed in action in December, 1942.
He was born in Scotland in February, 1914, and served his apprenticeship in the Survey Department of the United Collieries, Ltd., West Lothian, from 1929 to 1936, during which time he also studied at the Royal Technical College, Glasgow, and at Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh. In 1935 he gained the Home Office Mine Surveyor’s Certificate, and was awarded first prize in the City and Guilds of London Institute examination in mine surveying.
In May, 1936, he was appointed surveyor at the Morro Velho mines of the St. John del Rey Mining Company, Ltd., and was still under contract with that company when he volunteered for service with the R.A.F.
Mr. Porteous was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1939.
