Philip Poore died suddenly at his residence at Winterslow, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, on January 28th, 1937, at the age of 62.
He received his technical training at Heriot Watt College, Edinburgh, and at the Royal School of Mines, obtaining his A.R.S.M. in 1896. He then, and was for three years surveyor and later acting general manager at Langlaagte Deep.
This was followed by a year’s work as manager of St. Gerera Development Co. in Mashonaland. From 1900 to 1902 he was district engineer to the Mashonaland Agency, and in 1903 he went to the Gold Coast as Manager of the Anfargah mine for a year. His experience in West Africa enabled him to write a paper on the Prestea district, which was published in vol. xiv of the Transactions. His subsequent work was mainly consulting and he visited Norway, the Caucasus, Mexico, Arizona, Siberia, Canada, and Brazil. At one period he was in practice as a consulting engineer in London, and at times acted as assistant to the consulting engineer to the Consolidated Gold Fields of South Africa, Ltd.
Mr. Poore was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1902, and was transferred to Membership in 1908.
