John Henry Polglase died on 18 April, 1966, at the age of 60.
He was educated at the Camborne School of Mines, gaining the first class associateship and the Richard Pearce gold medal.
He joined Sungei Besi Mines, Ltd., Selangor, Malaya, as assistant to the manager and remained with the company until December, 1941, when he was mobilized with the Federated Malay States voluntary forces.
After the war he rejoined Sungei Besi as assistant manager, subsequently becoming general manager, and was largely responsible for the rehabilitation and reorganization of the company’s two large opencast mines after the Japanese occupation of Malaya. He retained the position of general manager until 1953, when he transferred in the same capacity to Tronoh Mines. Ltd., Perak.
Mr. Polglase became an Associate Member of the Institution in 1946, and a full Member in 1957. In 1960 he was elected Overseas Member of Council for Malaysia and undertook the formation of the Local Section there. He served as Overseas Member of Council until 1963, then returning to England.
