Ian Campbell Penney was killed in action in France on September 26th, 1915.
In the autumn of 1914 he obtained a commission in the Royal Scots, and rose to the rank of Captain in a few months. He was 30 years of age, and was educated at Glenalmond and at Camborne School of Mines. On the conclusion of his professional course, he was engaged for two years as assayer and surveyor at Trelogan lead and zinc mine, Flintshire.
In 1907 he went to Tasmania to widen his experience, and remained there for three years, working in various capacities on the mine of the Tasmania Gold Mining Company at Beaconsfield. From 1911 to 1914 he held the position of first assistant engineer to the Bisichi Tin Co. in Northern Nigeria, and previous to the outbreak of the war had been spending a few months at his home in Scotland.
Mr. Penney was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1908, and was transferred to Associateship in 1914.
