Hugh Pearson died in Glasgow from pneumonia following influenza, on February 13th, 1929, at the age of 62.
He commenced his career at the age of 12, pumping and hauling and mining in various collieries in Lanarkshire and Stirlingshire. At the age of 21 he was employed as an inspector, and two years later as under manager by Messrs. James Nimmo & Co., Ltd. For two years he was assistant manager of a mine in Spain, then manager of the Avonhead colliery.
In 1897, he went to Rhodesia, where he practised as a consulting engineer for the Pacific Syndicate. In 1902, he went to Brazil and Argentina, to examine diamond and gold properties, and was in South America for several years. Subsequently, his headquarters were in London.
Mr. Pearson was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1901, and was transferred to Membership in 1906.
