Henry Francis Olds died in Cornwall as the result of an accident on November 18th, 1914.
From 1891 to 1893 he was studying mining at the Camborne School of Mines and he completed his technical training by a course at the Royal School of Mines, London, where he remained until 1896. His first professional engagement took him to India, where he was occupied in prospecting work for about two years. Upon the termination of this appointment, he took over the managership of the Cape Asbestos Co., Ltd., at Griqualand West, for about a year, leaving there in 1901 to manage the De Beers Co.’s Rhodesian gold properties. Later he had charge of their Bechuanaland properties also.
He remained with the De Beers Co. until 1908, when he returned to England and resided in Cornwall for some time. In 1907 [1909?] he went abroad again to fulfil an engagement at the Lone Star Mine, Gadzema, Rhodesia, where he remained for about 18 months. In 1911 he transferred his activities to the Kimberley Tyne-Gold Mining Syndicate at Hartley, Rhodesia, with whom he remained until the close of the following year, when he returned to England. He again resided in Cornwall, and it was whilst engaged in mining operations there that he met with the accident which resulted in his death.
Mr. Olds was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1895, and was transferred successively to Associateship in 1898 and to Membership in 1904. He became a Life Member in 1905.
