Eric Newbold died, following a flying accident in a display at Penang, on January 31st, 1938, at the age of 44.
He was educated at Uppingham and at the Royal School of Mines, which he entered in 1912. His course was interrupted by the War and he completed it in 1919, receiving his Associateship of the School in metallurgy.
He enlisted with the Royal Fusiliers in 1914 and was commissioned in the R.G.A. in January, 1915, serving in France with trench mortar and heavy batteries, and in a Field Survey Company, R.E., until he was wounded severely in 1917. He held the rank of Captain on demobilisation.
In 1920 he went to the U.S.A. to take up an appointment with the Phelps Dodge Corporation, and in the following year he went to Dome mines, Ontario. In April, 1922, he left Canada for the Straits Settlements as assistant works manager of the Eastern Smelting Co., Ltd., at Penang. Later he became assistant general manager and in 1933 general manager. He was a member of the Legislative Council and Chairman of the Local Chamber of Commerce and his interest in flying is shown by his being first President of the Penang Flying Club. He was also Major and C.O. of the Eurasian Company of the Straits Settlements Volunteer Force, and for his services in this connexion he was awarded the O.B.E. (military division) in 1933.
Mr. Newbold became a Student of the Institution in 1919 and was elected an Associate in 1928.
