Thomas Ebenezer Mackenzie died at Huelva, Spain, on October 8th, 1927, at the age of 64.
In 1876 he was enrolled as a student of the Technical College, Glasgow, and also worked in the laboratory of Messrs. Wallace, Tallock & Clark, of Glasgow. On the completion of his course he was appointed as an assistant chemist in the Glasgow works of the Tharsis Sulphur & Copper Co., Ltd., where he remained until 1886, and was then sent to the company’s mines in Spain. Returning to Scotland in 1886, he became chemist and metallurgist at the Dalzell Steel Works, Motherwell.
From 1895 to 1898 he was engaged in technical research for the late Mr. J.S. MacArthur, and from the latter date to 1902 was technical manager of the North British White Lead Co., Ltd. In 1902 he went to Argentina as metallurgist and smelting manager to the Capillitas Copper Co., Ltd. In 1904 he was placed in charge of the metallurgical plant of the Mina da Serra da Caveira, Portugal, and two years later was appointed manager. Subsequently he returned to the service of the Tharsis Co., with whom he remained until his death.
Mr. Mackenzie was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1909, and was transferred to Membership in 1910.
