Sydney Cyril Mills died on 12th December, 1955, at the age of 61.
He was trained in his profession at the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining from 1911 and gained the Diploma of the school before joining H.M. Forces in 1914. He served as captain in the 2nd Bn., Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry, until 1919.
On demobilization he took up the position of assistant engineer in Northern Nigeria for the Niger Co., Ltd., which he held until 1921. From 1922 to 1926 Mr. Mills was employed by Selection Trust, Ltd., as a mining engineer working in England, the Gold Coast and in Liberia and carried out exploration and prospecting work, principally for diamonds. He was engaged in Borneo as engineer to the Borneo Co., Ltd., for the following three years, and during the year 1929-1930 was engineer-in-charge of prospecting in Central Africa for Sir Robert Williams and Co.
From 1930 to 1932 Mr. Mills was adviser on mining to a London finance house, but in 1932 returned to field work and was manager and chief engineer to the Langkat Co. working in Borneo and China for 4 years.
Mr. Mills was engaged for about ten years up to 1947 in work other than mining, then did prospecting in Angola. He had recently returned to live in London.
Mr. Mills was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1926.
