Mansfeldt Charles Nightingale Mills was killed in action in France on December 29th, 1915. He joined the Tunnelling Section of the Royal Engineers, as 2nd Lieutenant, in September, 1915, and had only been in France a few weeks when he met with his death, at the age of 24 years.
He took a special course in mining at Birmingham University, and afterwards a course of assaying with Mr. G.T. Holloway. For about a year, from 1908 to 1909, he acted as surveyor at Frickley Colliery, Yorkshire; and for the next three years was engaged in prospecting work and surveying in various parts of Spain.
In 1912 he went to Northern Nigeria, where he spent nearly two years prospecting for the Rukuba. Co. After a short vacation in England, he returned to Northern Nigeria, to take up an appointment with the Berridia Tin Mines, Ltd. He held this post till he returned home to join the Royal Engineers in the summer of 1915.
Mr. Mills was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1914.
