John Richard Smyth McClure received his technical training at the South African College, Cape Town, and at the School of Mines and Technology, Johannesburg, in the years 1912 to 1914, and in December of the latter year was granted the Diploma in mining engineering of the Johannesburg School of Mines. In January, 1915, he was granted the degree of B.Sc. and Diploma in mining engineering of the Cape University. During the period of his training he had eight months’ practical work at mines, including experience in hand and machine stoping, development, tramming, sampling and surveying.
In October, 1915, he received his commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers, and in January, 1916, was placed in charge of a section of the 257th Tunnelling Co., R.E. He subsequently received the rank of Captain.
Mr. McClure was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1917.
