George Stephen Mackenzie died in Edinburgh on December 27th, 1916. He was about 60 years of age.
He was educated at Heidelberg University and obtained the degree of Ph.D. in 1879. In 1882 he went to the United States and for two years was actively engaged in mining pursuits in Colorado. He taught analytical chemistry for six months at the State School of Mining, Golden, Colorado, and afterwards served as chemist to the Aspen Smelting Co.
He went to Australia in 1886, and for five years was occupied in inspecting and reporting on mines in New South Wales, Queensland and Tasmania. In 1891 he was appointed manager and chemist to the works of the Sydney Tin Smelting Co. of New South Wales, a position which he held for 25 years. The state of his health necessitated a journey home, and in June, 1916, he came to Edinburgh for special treatment of the disease from which he was suffering. He was making good progress when he succumbed to an attack of influenza.
Mr. Mackenzie was elected a Member of the Institution in 1900.
