Edward John Membrey died in South Africa in June, 1944, at the age of 43.
He studied at the Royal School of Mines from 1919 to 1923, and was awarded an Associateship in Mining. In April, 1924, he entered the service of the Cie Aramayo de Mines en Bolivie, and during his three years there he was engaged on mine sampling and surveying at the bismuth and tin mines of the Tasna (Bolivia) section of the company and also held the position of sub-manager of the section.
From 1928 to 1930 he was engineer-prospector to Tanganyika Concessions, Ltd., Uganda, and in November, 1930, took up an appointment with the Central Mining and Investment
Corporation, Ltd., Johannesburg. He was employed for two years by Durban Roodepoort Deep, Ltd., at Roodepoort, and in 1934 was engaged in the Study Department of Consolidated Main Reef, Maraisburg, where he remained until 1940. He was then appointed to the underground staff of the Modder East gold mine, which position he held at the time of his death.
Mr. Membrey was elected a Student of the Institution in 1923, and was transferred to Associateship in 1928.
