Charles Robert Millar died suddenly at Welwyn North, Hertfordshire, on 27th June, 1951, at the age of 76.
He was born in Australia and received his technical training by private tuition in Sydney, N.S.W. From 1893 to 1896 he was engaged in alluvial mining, prospecting and surveying in New South Wales and Queensland, and from 1901 to 1911 worked on the Witwatersrand at Wit Deep, Comet and Langlaagte Deep mines.
He went to the Gold Coast in 1911 as village master at the Abbontiakoon mine and other mines of the Fanti Consolidated group. In 1917 he was put in charge of the manganese property at Nsuta of Wassaw Exploring Syndicate, Ltd., which later became the African Manganese Co., Ltd., of which Mr. Millar was made mine superintendent in 1923 and manager in 1924. He subsequently joined the board of directors, and also served on the London Advisory Committee of the Gold Coast Chamber of Mines for some years.
Mr. Millar was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1930 and was transferred to Membership in 1932.
