Bertram Morton died in Egypt on February 2nd, 1917, whilst on active service with the Western Frontier Forces. He was 40 years of age, and had been seconded from the Mines Department at Cairo to the Egyptian Coastguard Service, with the rank of Bimbashi (Captain).
He studied mining at Camborne School of Mines and in 1903 went to China as assistant engineer to the Anglo-French Mining and Quicksilver Concessions, of which he became assistant manager. In 1907 he gave up this appointment and went to Ceylon as underground and assistant manager at the Medapola graphite mine.
He remained in Ceylon till 1909, when he went to Burma for two years, at first on a reporting engagement in Upper Burma for a Rangoon mining company, and afterwards to Lower Burma, where he acted as assistant manager to the Tavoy Wolfram and Tin Concessions, Ltd. From 1911 to 1914, he was an assistant inspector in the Mines Department of the Egyptian Government.
Mr. Morton was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1916.
