Nils Erik Lenander died in Stockholm on 9th March, 1956, at the age of 73.
Mr. Lenander received practical training at iron mines in North Sweden from 1901 to 1903 before entering Uppsala University as a mining student. He obtained the M.A. of that University and passed the mining examination at Stockholm Institute of Technology in 1905.
He worked as mining engineer at a gold mine in West Africa in 1906 and in the following year took up the position of mining engineer at Orkla Mining Co., in the Trondheim district of Norway. Three years later he was appointed general manager of a zinc and lead mine in Sweden and in 1912 returned to Orkla as general manager. It was while he was general manager of Orkla that the world-famous method for the extraction of sulphur from pyrites was developed. Mr. Lenander remained with that company until 1939, having joined the board of directors in 1922.
In 1935 Mr. Lenander became a director of Messrs. Mason and Barry, Ltd., and held that position at the time of his death.
He was elected to Membership of the Institution in 1923.
