Alan John Walker Legge died on 28th May, 1960, at the age of 60.
Born in Australia, Mr. Legge studied engineering at King’s College, London University, and between 1919 and 1925 took the double diploma course in mining and mining geology at the Royal School of Mines, gaining the A.R.S.M. in mining geology.
During 1925 and 1926 he was attached to the Gold Coast Geological Survey and in the following year took up the position of mining assistant and surveyor with Ropp Tin, Ltd., Nigeria. From 1928 until 1934 Mr. Legge held the appointment of Inspector of Mines, Sierra Leone, and during the last four years was Acting Chief Inspector of Mines.
On leaving Sierra Leone in 1934 he became Inspector of Mines, Uganda. He studied safety practices and laws in force in Johannesburg and during 1937 returned to Imperial College to take a course in electricity, so completing the requirements for the A.R.S.M. in mining, which he was awarded. In 1939 he was promoted Senior Inspector of Mines, and retained this post until his retirement ten years later. Mr. Legge lived in Melbourne for some years and in 1955 took up the appointment of chief of the mines section in the Papua and New Guinea Public Service, Port Moresby. He transferred to the Mines Department, Wau, in 1956, and returned to Melbourne in 1958. He came to England shortly afterwards.
Mr. Legge was elected a Student of the Institution in 1923, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1930 and to full Membership in 1946.
