Raymond Molloy Kateley died of typhoid fever on 21st May, 1918, in Northern Nigeria, at the age of 64.
He was trained at Camborne School of Mines from 1905 to 1908, leaving with a First Class Certificate, and then worked as assayer and surveyor at South Crofty mine for two years.
He went to Siberia in 1910 to take up a position at Athasar Copper Fields, Ltd., and in 1911 was employed by Taquah Central Mine, Ltd., West Africa, later transferring to Broomassie Mine, Ltd. From 1912 to 1913 he was assistant manager at Filani (Nigeria) Tin Mining Co., Ltd., and held the appointment of manager until 1915.
He left to join H.M. Forces, serving with a commission in the Royal Engineers. On demobilization he returned to Filani (Nigeria) Tin Mining Co. and worked as manager for Messrs. Lake & Currie, leaving in March, 1922, to join Anglo Continental Mines Co., Ltd. After five months he was appointed manager of Anglo Nigerian Tin Mining Co., Ltd., and in November, 1925, took over the managership of Karre Tin Co., Ltd., Nigeria. This appointment he held until the winding-up of the company in 1928, when he was transferred to Nigerian Base Metals Corporation, Ltd. On the formation of the new Anglo-Nigerian Corporation, Ltd., in 1929, Mr. Kateley was made general manager, and in 1932 became general manager also of three other companies — Kassa Mining Co., Ltd, which he managed until the company was wound up in 1936; Ribon Valley (Nigeria) Tinfields, Ltd., until 1940; and United Tin Areas of Nigeria, Ltd. From 1936 to 1940 he was also employed as mine manager of Gold & Base Metal Mines of Nigeria, Ltd.
Mr. Kateley was elected to Associateship in 1913 and to Membership in 1928.
