Kenneth Alexander Knight Hallowes died on 27th August, 1952, at the age of 73.
He was admitted to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1898, and took honours in both parts of the Natural Sciences Tripos, specializing in geology in the second part. For a short time he engaged in research in the University metallurgical laboratory but in 1902 he entered the Royal School of Mines obtaining the Associateship in mining in the following year. He was then appointed mining engineer to the Pantymwyn Lead Mining Co., North Wales, also acting as surveyor to the Halkyn Drainage Tunnel Co. In 1904 Mr. Knight Hallowes joined the staff of the Imperial Institute, London, as assistant mineralogist and a year later was appointed to the Geological Survey of India. He remained in that service for 21 years, retiring in 1926.
Mr. Knight Hallowes then studied for the Church and qualified in Theology at Cambridge University. He was vicar of Pampisford, Cambridge, from 1928 to 1931, of Leighton Bromswold, near Huntingdon, from 1931 to 1933, of Lingen, near Ludlow, from 1934 to 1936, and of Llangarron, Herefordshire, from 1937 until 1949, when he went to live at Windermere, moving to Cheltenham the following year. He was in poor health for some time before his death.
Mr. Knight Hallowes’ published work included papers in the Records of the Geological Survey of India, and several volumes of poetry. He was an Associate Member of the Institution from 1904 onwards, and was also a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and of the Institute of Physics and a member of other associations.
