Godfrey Samuel Kope died in 1938, at the age of 51.
He was born in Australia and was educated in South Africa. In 1903 he matriculated at Cape University and after some professional experience received his B.Sc. degree in mining engineering in 1915.
He began his career as a mining engineer in 1908 when he obtained a position as sampler with the Simmer East Gold Mining Co., Ltd. The next four years were spent with Simmer East and the Geduld Proprietary Mines, Ltd., in various capacities, and in 1912 he was appointed shift-boss at Springs Mines, Ltd. Later that year he returned to the Geduld company in a similar position before obtaining an appointment as chief surveyor to the Modderfontein Deep Levels, Ltd., in 1913. He subsequently became chief surveyor and then active mine captain to the May Consolidated Gold Mines Co., Ltd. where his service was interrupted by the Great War.
He served with the Royal Engineers from 1916-18 and from 1919 to May, 1920, he was mine captain to the Modderfontein Deep Levels. The rest of his career was spent with Transvaal mining companies. Mr. Kope was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1923.
