Brian Arthur Douglas Kinahan died suddenly in Johannesburg on 9th December, 1952, at the age of 63.
He studied at the Royal School of Mines from 1909 to 1912, gaining the A.R.S.M. and B.Sc. degree in mining, and the Diploma of the Imperial College. On graduation he was awarded an I.M.M. Postgraduate Scholarship tenable at Ferreira Deep gold mine, Johannesburg, where he subsequently became a shift boss.
In August, 1915, Mr. Kinahan returned to England to join the Royal Engineers, and in September was sent to France as an officer in 174 Tunnelling Coy., R.E. He served there until 1919, being appointed an Assistant Controller of Mines in 1917 and O.C. of 253 Tunnelling Coy., R.E., in June, 1918. During this service he was awarded the Military Cross.
On demobilization he returned to Ferreira Deep, and early in 1920 joined the Underground Investigations Department of Rand Mines, Ltd. In 1924 he was transferred to New Modderfontein as mine overseer, and from 1927 to 1930 was a section manager at City Deep. In 1930 he was appointed underground manager at Durban Roodepoort Deep, and in 1933 was transferred to the Johannesburg office of Central Mining & Investment Corporation as assistant to the consulting engineer and Chairman of the Investigations Committee. Between 1937 and 1944 he was successively manager of Reitfontein No.II and Holfontein, Blyvooruitzicht, City Deep and Durban Roodepoort Deep gold mines, returning to the Johannesburg office of Central Mining in the latter year as assistant consulting engineer. In 1945 he was appointed consulting engineer to Central Mining, and at the time of his death was the senior consultant to that group.
Mr. Kinahan was elected a Student of the Institution in 1912, and was transferred to Associate Membership in 1921.
