William Tasker Hallimond died in Johannesburg in December, 1923, at the age of 66.
He was born in Durham, and in 1872 was articled for five years as mining apprentice to Mr. W. Lishman, agent and mining engineer to Messrs. Henry Stobart & Co., Etherley Collieries. On completion of his articles he was appointed manager of the Durham Main Colliery, which position he held until 1881.
In 1882 he went to South Africa as manager of the Great Stormberg Colliery, Cape Colony, and he managed various collieries in that colony and the Transvaal until 1899, in which year he was appointed manager of the Crown Deep, Geldenhuis Deep and Rose Deep mines. Thereafter he was principally associated with gold-mining and in more recent years he acted as consulting engineer to various companies.
Mr. Hallimond was elected a Member of the Institution in 1912.
