Tom Edward Orridge Hull died on 1st October, 1957, at the age of 70.
Mr. Hull was professionally trained at the Royal School of Mines from 1906 to 1909, gaining the Associateship of the School. He then left England, for South Africa to take a year’s postgraduate course at East Rand Proprietary Mines, Ltd., Transvaal, and at the end of 1910 was appointed assistant surveyor to Randfontein Central Gold Mining Co., Ltd., and a year later joined West Rand Consolidated Mines, Ltd., in a similar capacity. He obtained the Government Mine Surveyor’s Certificate of South Africa in 1912, and later that year was appointed surveyor to Transvaal Coal Trust Company, Ltd. During 1912-13 he also did some survey work at Brakpan and Springs gold mines.
After leave in England in 1913 Mr. Hull left in January of the following year to take up the post of assistant mining engineer to Copper Mines of Copiapó, Ltd., Chile, but returned to England on the outbreak of war. Early in 1915 he was commissioned in the Royal Field Artillery and transferred to the Royal Engineers (Tunnelling Company), with the rank of lieutenant and acting captain, sewing in France. During 1919 he was with the Rhine Army and in 1920 transferred to the Military Works Department, Mesopotamia, as an assistant executive engineer until 1922.
On his return to England Mr. Hull took a two-year course in oil technology at Royal School of Mines and in 1924 surveyed an asphalt property in the south of France and shortly afterwards travelled to South America.
Mr. Hull was geologist and surveyor to British Controlled Oilfields, Ltd., in Venezuela from 1925 to 1927 and in 1928 carried out a survey in Colombia for American Independent Oil Company. Between 1929 and 1931 he undertook survey work for Venezuelan Oil Concessions, Ltd., and then joined Petroleum Co., Ltd., in Maracaibo, Venezuela.
He returned to England shortly afterwards and lived in London, retaining an interest in mining affairs and finances until his death.
Mr. Hull joined the Institution as a Student in 1909 and was elected an Associate Member in 1922.
