Peter Mercer Hume died of blackwater fever at Obuasi hospital, Gold Coast, on March 11th, 1934, at the age of 55.
He was educated at Hillhead Academy, Glasgow, and was then occupied for two in the chemical and physical science departments of Messrs. Baird & Tatlock. After leaving this firm he had several years’ commercial and mercantile experience in Glasgow, and attended courses in mining and geology at the Glasgow and West of Scotland Technical College.
In 1900 he was appointed assistant reduction officer of the Ouro Preto Gold Mines of Brazil, Ltd., and served on the various properties of this company as reduction officer and superintendent until 1927. He was subsequently engaged by the Ashanti Goldfields Corporation, Ltd., at Obuasi, Gold Coast.
Mr. Hume was elected an Associate of the Institute in 1904.
