Gerald Hillsdon Hutton died in California on 3rd April, 1965. He was 81 years of age.
Mr. Hutton’s technical training in mechanical engineering was gained in New Zealand from 1900 to 1906. From New Zealand he moved to Risdon Iron and Locomotive Works, San Francisco, as engineer to the company, and for the next five years was in charge of various mining operations in the United States of America, Canada and Mexico.
From 1913 to 1915 Mr. Hutton had charge of Union Construction Co.’s operations in Alaska, returning to California in 1916 to take up the post of superintendent with Valdor Dredging Co.
In 1919 he was appointed superintendent to Maryville Dredging Co. and staff engineer to Metals Exploration Co., being promoted assistant manager of the latter company in 1923. He also served on the boards of a number of other mining companies. From 1928 to 1936 Mr. Hutton was associated in various capacities with the Anglo-Oriental Group in London and Malaya, and then came to London to undertake consulting engineering work on his own account. He moved to California in 1949 and, among other activities, was engaged in work with the U.S. Navy.
Mr. Hutton had been a Member of the Institution since 1932. He was the author of several technical papers and was a member of various institutions in North America and elsewhere.
