Ernest Charles Burgess Heden died in Melbourne, Australia, on February 15th, 1933, at the age of 54.
He entered the Sydney University in 1895 and graduated in 1902 after a most brilliant career during which he obtained the degrees of B.A., B.Sc., and B.E., in addition to being awarded prizes and scholarships in chemistry, physics, engineering and geology.
After gaining practical experience at Broken Hill he was appointed science director of the Castlemaine School of Mines, Victoria, in 1904. He resigned this position about two years later and made a trip to England, visiting mines in Cornwall and Cumberland. He then went to Siberia, the United States and Asia Minor. Returning to Australia, he devoted his attention chiefly to technical education and was in succession lecturer or principal at the Castlemaine, Charters Towers, and Zeehan Schools of Mines.
At the beginning of 1922 he joined the staff of the Tait Publishing Co., Melbourne, as associate-editor of the Chemical Engineering and Mining Review and the Common wealth Engineer, and conducted the policies of these two journals thenceforth.
Mr. Heden was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1911, and was transferred to Membership in 1917.
