Charles Hunter died suddenly, of heart failure, in Nicaragua on April 80th, 1925, while on a reporting trip to a gold mine.
He received his training at Coatbridge Technical School and Mining College, N.B., and on leaving the college he was engaged for two years as laboratory assistant and for two and a half years as chemist by the Carnbrae Chemical Co., Ltd., of Coatbridge.
In 1896 he was appointed chemist and assayer to the United Goldfields of Manica, Ltd., subsequently known as Rezende, Ltd., afterwards becoming cyanide assistant at the Rezende Mine, Umtali, Rhodesia. From 1908 until 1909 he was metallurgist to the Selukwe-Columbia Gold Mining Co., and the Ayrshire Gold Mining Co. and Rhodesia Exploration and Development Co. respectively. In 1909 he transferred his activities to the Transvaal as assistant manager, afterwards manager, of the New Lisbon-Berlyn Co., Ltd. Three years later he went to Swazieland to the Pigg’s Peak Development Co., Ltd., with whom he remained for several years.
In 1917 he returned to Scotland to take up the position of general manager of the Kintyre Coal & Oil Co., Ltd., at Campbeltown, Argyllshire, and six years later he transferred his services to the Campbeltown Coal Co. Shortly afterwards; however, he moved to London, and subsequently was employed in reporting and other work of a consultative nature.
Mr. Hunter was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1900 and was transferred to Membership in 1911.
