Alexander Maxwell Howe died at Swanbourne, Perth, Western Australia, on August 14th, 1934, at the age of 56, after a long illness.
He was the son of the late James Howe, a South Australian Minister of the Crown and one of the framers of the Commonwealth Constitution. Mr. A.M. Howe graduated from the South Australian School of Mines, Adelaide, in December, 1897, and during the next six years held positions on the Princess Royal and Great Boulder Perseverance mines. In July, 1905, he was appointed manager, inspector, and subsequently superintendent of State Batteries, Western Australia, and chief inspector of machinery concurrently, and in November, 1928, he was appointed State Mining Engineer, Department of Mines, Western Australia, a position which he held until September, 1933, when ill-health caused him to retire.
Mr. Howe was elected a Member of the Institution in 1929.
