Frederic Young Garnett died at Benoni, Transvaal, on November 29th, 1916, at the age of about 40 years.
He had studied mining for over three years at Camborne School of Mines and went to Rhodesia in 1895. He remained in that country till the end of 1898, holding in succession posts as government assayer at Bulawayo; under manager and assayer at the Dunraven Mine, Selukwe; assistant manager to the Premier Concessions of Mozambique, at Umtali, and battery manager to the Penhalonga Gold Mining Co.
His next post was in Western Australia, where he was assistant manager, and subsequently manager, to the Fraser South Extended Gold Mining Co. After four years’ work with this company, he resigned the appointment and came back to England on vacation. I
n 1906 he went out to West Africa and for two years was engaged in mining at Akrokerri, Ashanti, Gold Coast; and in 1913 he spent a further year in the-same district, with the Prestea Block ‘A,’ Ltd.
His last engagement, with the New Modderfontein Gold Mining Co., at Benoni, had been running for more than two years when it was terminated by his death.
Mr. Garnett was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1904.
