Ian Scott Ferguson died after an operation in Kaduna on 3rd April, 1961. He was 47 years of age.
Mr Ferguson received his technical training at the Camborne School of Metalliferous Mining from 1933 to 1936, and gained the Associateship of the School. He worked with Messrs. Osborne and Chappel from 1936 until 1940, as assistant engineer on hydraulic and gravel pumping mines in Malaya until 1938, and between 1938 and 1939 was engaged on prospecting. He was then appointed section manager on Idris Hydraulic Tin, Ltd., and in 1940 became manager of Lahat Mines, Ltd., and mining assistant in the company’s head office.
Mr. Ferguson served with the Royal Engineers during the second world war, and on demobilization in 1946 went to Nigeria to take up the appointment of Inspector of Mines, Nigeria Mines Department, Jos, from January, 1947. He was promoted Senior Inspector of Mines in April, 1953, and later became Principal Inspector of Mines. He was substantive Assistant Chief Inspector at the time of his death.
Mr. Ferguson was elected to Associate Membership of the Institution in 1950.
