Herbert Eyden was accidentally killed at an aerodrome in France, on April 7th, 1918, whilst serving as Captain in the Royal Garrison Artillery. He was 27 years of age, and was expecting to return to England a fortnight later for six months further training.
He had a highly successful career at the Royal School of Mines, where he was a student from 1909 to 1912. He obtained the diploma of A.R.S.M. in the first class; the D.I.C; and was awarded the Brough medal for mine surveying. He also gained one of the Institution Scholarships in mining, and took a post-graduate course with the Ooregum Gold Mining Company of India.
He worked on the Ooregum mine for eighteen months and on the Balaghat mine for five months; and terminated his course in October, 1914, when he returned to England and took a commission in the Royal Garrison Artillery. In January, 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross, and obtained his Captaincy in the early part of 1918.
Mr Eyden was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1912, and was transferred to Associateship in 1916.
