Deyman Eastmond died in a blasting accident on 22nd May, 1959, at the age of 47.
Mr. Eastmond was a student at Birmingham University between 1930 and 1935 in the metal mining department, and gained the B.Sc. degree. His vacation work was at South Crofty, Mill Close, Halkyn and Egremont. He went to South Africa in September, 1935, as a graduate learner at Simmer and Jack mine, and then at Vogelstruisbult Gold Mining Areas, Ltd., and on completion of his training in 1936, Mr. Eastmond remained with the latter company until the outbreak of war, rising from shift boss to grade control officer.
In 1939 Mr. Eastmond joined the Royal Engineers as a cadet and was commissioned to 170 Tunnelling Coy. in April, 1940.
After the war Mr. Eastmond returned to the Transvaal, working again at Volgelstruisbult for a year before his appointment in December, 1946, as field engineer with African Explosives and Chemical Industries, Ltd., Johannesburg. He was still employed by this company thirteen years later when he met his death in an accident at the Modderfontein dynamite factory.
Mr. Eastmond joined the Institution as a Student in 1934, and was elected to Associate Membership in 1942.
