Arthur Alexander English died in Bulawayo Hospital on February 9th, 1934, at the age of 49, after an illness of some weeks’ duration.
He graduated A.R.S.M. (Min.) from the Mines in July, 1907, and immediately went to South Africa to take a post-graduate course at the Simmer & Jack Proprietary Mines, Germiston. On completion of the course he obtained the post of head sampler to the North Randfontein G.M. Co., Ltd., and from 1909 to 1915 was shift-boss and latterly mine captain on the Robinson Deep.
He joined H.M. Forces and was gazetted 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers (255th Tunnelling Co.), and subsequently was transferred to the Royal Air Force as observer and pilot.
On demobilization he returned to South Africa, at first to gold mines in the Transvaal, then to the Waterval Platinum Co., Ltd., and finally to Bulawayo, Southern Rhodesia.
Mr. English was admitted to Studentship of the Institution in 1907 and was transferred to Associateship in 1919.
