John Ernest Davies died at Leicester on June 14th, 1939, after an attack of angina pectoris, at the age of 56.
He received his technical education at Truro College, and in 1899 became a pupil apprentice to Messrs. Holman Brothers, Ltd. Five years later he entered the Camborne School of Mines as a student and pupil teacher, and a year later joined the staff of Bellis & Morcom, Ltd., as ‘improver’. After six months spent on experimental work in connexion with china clay and dewatering Wheal Vor Mine, he was appointed chief assistant lecturer in mechanical and electrical engineering at the Camborne School of Mines.
In 1909 he went to Brazil, as draughtsman and acting head of a department at the St. John D’el Rey Mine, and held his position there until 1921, when he was appointed chief draughtsman with Sandycroft, Ltd. In 1924 he became consulting engineer and works manager to the Doseley Quarries, Ltd., but in 1927 he once more joined the staff of the St. John D’el Rey Mining Co. for special work. A year later he was appointed ventilation engineer and physical research officer on the Kolar Gold Field for Messrs. John Taylor & Sons, and held that position for some years.
Mr. Davies was elected an Associate of the Institution in 1935.
