Herbert Henry Dains died in London on October 14th, 1924, in his 56th year.
In 1885 he obtained the Akroyd Scholarship and studied for the following three years at the Yorkshire College. On completing his course he became assistant to Dr. J. Lewkowitsch for about two years, and afterwards to the late Mr. Edward Riley.
In 1892 he proceeded to India to develop manganese properties at Vizianagram, to prospect the State, and to open up and develop other properties that might be found, and this led to a long association with the Vizianagram Mining Co., Ltd., chiefly concerned with manganese and magnesite deposits. He also reported on mines in Norway, Cornwall, and Wales, for Messrs. P. Macfadyan & Co. Later he took up a permanent residence in London where he carried on work as a consultant.
Mr. Dains was elected Member of the Institution in 1903.
